Bernard Arosteguy

1887-1956
French/Martinique
Biography:

Bernard Arosteguy was born in Itxassou located in the Basque region of France on January 18, 1887. He was ordained a priest on October 8, 1912 and was sent to Spanish Guinea to begin his mission work. Seven years later, Arosteguy was called to lead the mission on Martinique. It is here that he painted in earnest. In 1942, he became friends with the painter de la Neziere whose style, infused with bold colors and broad strokes, influenced Arosteguy. Having spent his entire life in the tropical sun, it is no wonder one sees such brightness in Arosteguy’s work.

Arosteguy died in Martinique on November 8, 1956.

Note

The frame is handmade from Mahogany (Swietenia mahagoni) native to south Florida and the Caribbean. It was likely made by the artist and original to the work; a very handsome presentation.
